Start Up Downtown, the first startup exhibition and job fair of its kind, attracted over 300 technically skilled jobseekers and students to the second floor balcony of the Union Street Station. Over 20 startups set up shop to network with attendees about job and internship opportunities, showcase their company and introduce their products and services to the Gainesville community. An array of startups were featured, including Partender, Eatable, Study Edge, Stage 7 and more. HackerHouse cadets also conducted live demos of their final products for the crowd.
Start Up Downtown was birthed out of GIT’s third forum, where employers voiced a need for increased traction and recognition of their company and the startup community here in town.
With a focus on boosting talent retention, attendees registered in EmployFlorida.com, the state of Florida’s job matching database, in advance to view and apply for open and available positions. Click here for current job listings.
“Start Up Downtown was the best networking event I have attended in a long time,” stated Anthony Ramos, director and founder of a social media startup named Local Optimize.
With a focus on increasing awareness, t-shirts promoting the vibrant startup community were distributed free-of-charge to the first 150 attendees. T-shirt sponsors include: Gold level – Capital City Bank; Silver Level – Institute for Workforce Innovation, Shadow Health, Mobiquity, OwnForce; and Bronze level – Fracture, Grooveshark, Trendy Entertainment, NeuroNet Learning, SharpSpring, Sporting Odyssey and Styledwel. Alachua County Public Schools provided tables for the companies. Feathr supercharged the networking experience by providing attendees easy access to the event information through its app. Queso Media Group captured the essence of the event and downtown scene through videography.
A group of downtown businesses, such as 101 Downtown, Vellos, Relish, Emiliano’s Café, Half Cork’d, Liquid Ginger and Harry’s, offered specials specifically for the Start Up Downtown crowd. McGurn Management Company also validated parking in the SE 2nd Avenue garage for attendees. All of the stars lined up on July 18 to showcase Gainesville’s innovative and collaborative spirit.
